If the rod bearings are making a clicking sound, they're on the way out and it's likely the crank won't last much longer. A tiny bit of side-to-side movement is ok, but anymore than about 2-3 degrees off center and you're looking at excessive slop.The ones that aren't in cases are usually stored upright unless they fit better on their side on the shelves.
